Guide to District Court
_______________________________________________________

District Court The District Court is the core of the American judicial system. While highly contested cases are brought to higher courts, most judicial decisions are made in the thousands of district courts across the country. Prosecutors and defense lawyers gather evidence and based on this form and present the best possible case for or against the defendant. Witnesses are brought in to support both sides of the case, and are sworn to an oath of truth. A jury of the defendant’s peers considers all the information presented in a fair and unbiased manner and comes to a collective agreement about the defendant’s guilt, while a judge oversees the proceedings and determines the defendant’s sentence following the jury’s decision. The District Court holds a tremendous amount of power and responsibility, as it has the task of determining the guilt of American citizens and upholding justice for all.

District Court at HMCE District Court members will simulate the proceedings of three trials, the subjects of which are to be determined by the senior staffers. Delegates will fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors in determining the defendant’s guilt or innocence. Delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of the American legal system and improve their public speaking and presentation skills while doing all that they can to ensure that justice is upheld.
