Guide to G8

Group of Eight

The Group of Eight is a forum for the governments of eight of the world’s major industrial economies; France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Russia. Established in 1975, to bring together political forces of the East and West, these nations currently represent 53% of the global nominal GDP and 42.5% of the global GDP. The G8 does not have a strong administrative structure like its counterparts the UN or World Bank. Instead, presidency of the group rotates on an annual basis between the members, and ministers for various portfolios are assigned throughout the year. The G8 is also responsible for sending representatives to other international summits to represent the group’s opinion on primarily economic and energy-related issues.

The G8 at HMCE

Harvard Model Congress Europe’s G8 will address some of the same critical challenges as the real Group of Eight. At HMCE, every delegate will represent the interests of a member state. For instance, a delegate may be assigned to serve as the representative from Brazil or the foreign minister of Mexico. During the simulation, delegates are expected to interact cooperatively in order to solve the problems posed by the conference briefings and any emergent crises. At the same time, it is important for delegates to remember the interests of their respective countries, and speak from the perspective of the nation they represent. Representatives will prove pivotal to the overall flow of information in the conference as they are charged with the pressing responsibility of conveying the economic interests of their respective member states to delegates in HMCE’ s many other committees.
