Guide to National Security Council

The National Security Council

The National Security Council (commonly referred to as the NSC) is composed of some of the President’s closest advisors and serves as venue for the discussion of issues of national security and foreign policy.  Since its creation in 1947 by the National Security Act, the NSC has come to play a substantial role in matters of American Security and foreign affairs.  Most of the affairs of the NSC remain confidential; however, its members often address the press and nation on developments in national security issues.  The primary members of the NSC are the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense, but are often joined in meetings by military leaders, the Director of National Intelligence, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the National Security Advisor.  The Council convenes in the White House’s Situation Room, and is in session in times of national crisis during which the members of the NSC provide the President with all relevant and up-to-date information on the situation at hand, allowing him to make rapid and often very crucial decisions to help protect the country.

NSC at HMCE

NSC delegates will be presented with contemporary international issues and crises with a direct impact on the security of the
United States.  Delegates must act quickly and decisively while making sure to collaborate with one another to find the best possible solution to the problem or crisis at hand.  In doing this, delegates will be able to improve their communicative, analytical, collaborative, and decision-making skills as they deal with a dynamic and top-secret crisis.  Despite the confidentiality of their discourse, NSC members must remain aware of developments in other branches of government during the conference and be able to alter their proposed solutions accordingly to assure that crisis is averted and that the safety of the United States, and perhaps the world, is secured above all else.
