Guide to Presidential Cabinet
_______________________________________________________

Presidential Cabinet The US Cabinet is composed of the most senior Presidentially-appointed leaders of the US Government’s Executive Branch. Established by Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution which states, “[the President] may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective officers,” the Cabinet today is made up of fifteen senior officials and other advisors with a collective expertise in essentially every area of public policy. Once approved via a simple majority in the US Senate, these officials advise the President on issues ranging from national defense and health care to education and energy. Another crucial role that cabinet members play is a direct link between the different departments of the Executive Branch and other parts of the government, often relaying information to the President, other departments, and even the American public by addressing the Press. Finally, cabinet members are instrumental in advocating for the President’s policies to be executed at state and local levels of government.

Cabinet at HMCE Cabinet members at HMCE have a crucial and exciting role, working together to critically evaluate and formulate the administration’s platform, and debate whether to support or fight legislation drafted by their fellow delegates. Cabinet members are experts in their respective fields, and will often be requested for testimony from delegates hoping to get a bill passed or defeated in committee. A Cabinet member’s most important role, however, is to ensure that the President’s policy agenda is applied as completely and effectively as possible in all matters and branches of government throughout the duration of the conference. In fulfilling all these duties as best as possible, Cabinet members will have a substantial and positive effect on all legislation produced at HMCE 2012.
