Solutions from the Summit: Tackling Sub-Saharan Africa’s Renewable Energy Crisis
In an international summit that occurred on 17th March, 2025, the World Bank presented a bill which was discussed in detail.
This is a conference where governments and organizations come together to address global challenges. Delegates from the UNHRC and European Council committee were present looking through and voting for the bills passed in the World Bank committee.
This bill proposes to address some of the grave issues faced by people of the Sub-Saharan region due to unavailability of basic electricity infrastructure. The bill proposes using Sub-Saharan Africa’s natural gas reserves as a short-term solution to the energy crisis while investing in renewable energy for long-term sustainability. It prioritizes natural gas development for stable energy supply, economic growth and job creation while minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, it supports small-scale solar energy investment and promotes public-private partnerships and international energy trade.
The initiative will be funded by the World Bank and other countries. This bill was passed in the international summit as well. There were a few people who expressed their reservations on the Bill. One of the speakers was the delegate of the Philippines who felt that some amendments could be made to the bill so it is more sustainable and stable. The delegate mentioned that a few clauses about human rights should be included so that while this solution is being worked upon no human rights of people living in those countries are violated. The delegate of Ukraine from UNHRC who also said some amendments should be made to the bill and that it was not a very practical bill. The other things said by the delegate were on the same lines as the delegate of the Philippines. The authors of the bill said that this bill will be operational within 91 days of it being passed. We hope that this bill can solve the pressing issue of the energy crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa. This will help many of the countries there and the people living there.
