Concerned Mother and Angry Father Snap Out at Conference of Mayors About Charter Schools
Sunday the 16th of March, while mayors were discussing the matter of charter and public schools at a UN conference, they were disturbed by an angry mom who stormed in to complain about her son's future in education. Only a few moments later, an irritated man, father of Shawn -an intelligent student of a charter school- stormed in the conference to express his opinion on the subject.
Charter schools are schools which are publicly founded but operate off of public-school money. This mode of operation has caused many conflicts between parents who want a better future for their children.
The mother stated that charter schools have many issues that need to be addressed and are not a good option for children like her own which undergo speech therapy and have other issues such as autism, mental health problems or financial instability. While the mother expressed her concern, the mayor of Miami stated the following:
“As much as I was concerned about the unannounced entrance of the lady, I have to admit I totally agree with her. As a representative of Miami, I believe that there should be faster competition among schools and charter schools do not support the minorities of our society”.
An anonymous source was also opposed to charter schools, as they believe they do not rise up to the standards of traditional public schools and the quality of education may be significantly lower. At last, the mother firmly expressed that charter schools offer limited special education services. The mayor of Detroit questioned whether students with disabilities will be left without the support they need to succeed.
On the other hand, the father of Shawn, a student with a bright future, was strongly opposed to the previous opinion. After his entrance at the conference, he spoke with certainty, saying it is a privilege to have the charter schools among the public schools as it gives the students the option to choose their future.
The mayor of Detroit agreed, stating the following:
“The father, is strongly opinionated, but I totally agree with his perspective. I’m not saying charter schools should be inferior to public schools but equal to them.”
School choice constitutes the biggest benefit for the father as parents can choose a school which aligns with their children’s needs and calls on certain subjects. At last, as confirmed by an anonymous source, charter schools aim for a higher performance than public schools. They have a contract, “the charter” that outlines academic goals which can be closed if they don’t align with the standards.
With that being said and by taking everything into account, the choice is left in the hands of the mayors about taking action for solving this matter.
